Hi! I'm Courtney and this is my fitness journal. Since I'm not great at introductions, how about I tell you 17 things about myself and this blog instead?
1. I'm a 26-year-old wildlife biology student in my second-to-last semester.
2. I'm blissfully married and we have a family of three cats and five reptiles.
3. I've been practicing yoga casually for over 12 years but now I'm looking to take my practice to the next level. My favorite pose is Warrior II.
4. My favorite foods are sashimi and macaroni 'n' cheese.
5. My hobbies include knitting, reading, sewing, hiking and playing video games, but that's another blog.
6. I'm training for a 5K using the Couch to 5K program and loving it so far! I hope one day to run a 10K or a half marathon.
7. I was diagnosed with ADD and clinical depression at age 15 and developed asthma at 23. I don't let these three things define me but I'm looking forward to the positive effect that improving my health will have on my conditions.
8. My favorite color is probably hot pink (though teal is a contender too) and a lot of my workout gear is neon pink so I'm not invisible when jogging next to busy roads.
9. I intend to use this blog as a daily health journal with posts including exercise and a very light food diary in order to keep myself accountable.
10. I'm getting fit for many reasons: I'm ashamed that climbing the stairs to my 5th floor apartment leaves me breathless; simple vanity - I don't like the way I look; my psychiatrist suggested 30 minutes of daily exercise to combat depression without drugs and since it made an impact ten years ago, I'm hopeful it will help now; I'll need to lift 40-50 pounds at most jobs in my intended career field - though I can do it now, I want it to be easier and unquestionable by future employers; I hope to one day add human kids to my family and being fit will make a pregnancy easier and be better for my child; and lastly, some of my clothes are getting tight and I don't have the budget to replace my wardrobe - I have to keep the one I have.
11. I don't have a healthy relationship with food. I eat out of boredom, I give in to cravings almost immediately and when I was in culinary school as a teenager I was also anorexic. The good news is that I enjoy healthy food as much as I enjoy unhealthy food so I know I can improve my eating habits.
12. I start my days with a short yoga routine, a glass of warm water with local honey and fresh lemon juice followed by a cup or three of coffee with a small splash of cream and stevia.
13. Calling myself a dork/nerd/geek and all of the above is a huge understatement. There's truly too much to list and explain here but I'm sure you'll get an idea of my silliness soon enough.
14. I've entered a body fitness transformation challenge on Reddit in the cutting challenge for extra motivation. I'm hoping this will be one last push of motivation to change.
15. The number on my scale doesn't matter. I gauge my progress through body measurements, cardio and breath capacity, my running distance, the way my clothes fit and the way I feel.
16. I wear a Wii Fit U pedometer every day. My daily average (over the course of a week) step goal is 5500 right now but I hope to increase that number over time.
17. I'm logging the miles that I walk and run as well as counting 30 minutes of yoga as 1 mile so that I can accompany Bilbo Baggins to Erebor and then join the Fellowship of the Ring on their journey to Mount Doom in Mordor!
